If you have already submitted your application through external link , without using the referral link.... your profile will be considered as an external candidate rather than referral candidate and the referrer will not get any benefit , but the hiring process is same for both.

It is tracked based on the application date, if the referral application comes first in the system with the earlier date it will be considered as referral candidates, else it will by default be considered as external application.
